More than 50 members of the Jewish fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi, considered one of the largest Jewish fraternities in the world, visited the town of Sosúa on Thursday as part of a historical tour to learn about the legacy of Jewish refugees who arrived in the Dominican Republic during World War II.

The visitors are part of a group of hundreds of Jewish cruise passengers who arrived at the tourist port of Taino Bay from Miami. During their stay in the province of Puerto Plata, they took a special tour of Sosúa to learn firsthand about the history of the Jewish community that found refuge in this town.

The tour included visits to important historical sites such as the Sosúa Synagogue, as well as the iconic Mirador Park in Sosúa, where the Jewish community is honored overlooking the beautiful Alicia Beach.

During the visit, the cruise passengers expressed their amazement and interest in the history they are now exploring about Sosúa and the role the Dominican Republic played in welcoming hundreds of Jewish refugees during one of the most difficult periods in world history.

The group was accompanied and guided by Joe Benjamin, one of the Jews who arrived in the country during those years, who shared firsthand accounts and details about the experience of the Jewish community that settled in Sosúa.

This visit highlights the growing international interest in Sosúa’s unique history and its legacy as a symbol of solidarity and a refuge for the Jewish people.
